At Boston's Concord-Carlisle High a Muslim poem is read for 9/11, the Pledge of Allegiance is not

The principal of Concord Carlisle High School is apologizing to parents about the school’s opening ceremony on Wednesday - the 12th anniversary of 9/11 - in which a Muslim poem was recited over the intercom but the Pledge of Allegiance was not.

Principal Peter Badalament said in a statement to parents that the poem was meant to promote "cross-cultural understanding," and that the Pledge of Allegiance was not read because of a mixup with the student reader.

The combination of the two has "outraged a small number of members of our community," Badalament said in an email to the Globe, noting that the school has received a handful of calls and about 10 emails from unhappy parents.

"Yesterday was the first Wednesday of the school year; we were unaware that our student Pledge reader had an internship commitment on this day," Badalament said in the statement.. "This was our responsibility to know. We humbly apologize that this oversight and communication gap occurred."

Badalament said officials were only thinking of the well-being of their students when they chose to read the poem, Mohja Kahf's "My Grandmother Washes Her Feet in the Sink of the Bathroom at Sears." The poem recounts a granddaughter's account of watching her grandmother adhere to the religious Muslim custom of washing her feet five times a day, though it puts the pair in an awkward situation at an American department store.

Kahf writes in a section of the poem:

Respectable Sears matrons shake their heads and frown
as they notice what my grandmother is doing,
an affront to American porcelain,
a contamination of American Standards
by something foreign and unhygienic
requiring civic action and possible use of disinfectant spray
They fluster about and flutter their hands and I can see
a clash of civilizations brewing in the Sears bathroom

Badalament said the district will "integrate the feedback that has been offered into our future work with students."

The part that really kicked me in the pants was the Pew Research Study that confirmed that Fox News had a pro “gay marriage” bias and that even liberal NPR was more “Fair and Balanced” on the issue than was Fox.

When a “news” organization decides what stories they will share and which to shelve, they are committing censorship by omission. In contrast to MSNBC’S more overt “in the bag” gayhem, the majority of Fox hosts just pretend the issue doesn’t exist.

Even in the broil of the same-sex “marriage” debate, Hannity rarely raised the issue and when it did come up, he looked like he was auditioning for the role of Chief Inspector Dreyfus in a Pink Panther remake: *Eye-twitch – “Let not your hearts be troubled,” followed by a butt shift and an uncomfortable segue to safer subjects, like treason or Benghazi, then throw the Nerf football to Camera #2. “It’s a wrap!”

Glenn Broadnax 'told investigators that he wanted to die,' a police source says. Broadnax, of Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, has been charged with menacing, obstructing governmental administration, rioting, cocaine possession, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct in connection with the incident.

The deranged, unarmed man whose wild antics Saturday night led cops to open fire near Times Square, wounding two bystanders with stray bullets, had a death wish, a police source said Sunday.

“He told investigators that he wanted to die,” the source said, adding that Glenn Broadnax had been smoking marijuana. “He told police he was off his medication and that he heard voices in his head, that people were talking to him.”

The Bedford-Stuyvesant man, described by cops as emotionally disturbed, had 23 prior arrests for offenses such as assault, robbery and criminal possession of a weapon, police said.

The fracas at busy W. 42nd St. and Eighth Ave. broke out about 9:36 p.m. when Broadnax attempted to evade cops who were trying to stop him from weaving between vehicles, cops said.

"This individual was blocking traffic and appeared to be attempting to be hit by cars when a police officer on foot patrol attempted to take him into custody," Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said hours later.

Broadnax, 35, was unharmed in the shooting and unarmed when he was arrested, police said.

Gonzalez, 29, of the 2600 block of North Sacramento, is charged with fatally shooting Miguel Delgado early Saturday in the 1500 block of North Milwaukee, across the street from Nick’s Beer Garden, shortly after closing time about 2:20 a.m., authorities said. Delgado died minutes later.

Gonzalez also is accused of trying to kill two others, a 20-year-old and an 18-year-old, authorities said.

Gonzalez allegedly shot Delgado in the head after he and two others got into an argument with Delgado and two other men “regarding rival gang affiliation,” Cook County Assistant State’s Attorney Christina Brewer said in court Sunday.

The verbal argument escalated and Delgado “threw a punch” at one of Gonzalez’s pals, Brewer said. “The defendant pulled out a gun and fatally shot the victim in the head,” she said.

New York police fired on a man who was acting erratically Saturday night at a busy midtown intersection in Manhattan, wounding two bystanders, according to social media and news media reports.

“OMG just witnessed NYPD gun down a pedestrian in Times Square,” Kerri Ann Nesbeth, a witness to the shooting, wrote on Twitter. She posted a photo of a man, in blue jeans and a white T-shirt, sprawled on his back on the sidewalk, blood apparently staining the fabric around his right knee. “This cannot be happening in front of me,” she wrote in another Twitter post.

A 19-year-old man was pronounced dead this morning after being found hanging in a cell at the 4th District police lockup on Friday afternoon.

Ofem's cause of death was pending an autopsy scheduled for Sunday.

A North Lawndale man who felt disrespected when a woman called for a ride home from his birthday party and fatally shot her, was finally captured by police more than a year later, according to prosecutors.

Tyrese Orr, 36, of the 1800 block of South Springfield Avenue was charged this week with first-degree murder for the death of 22-year-old Michelle Gregory on April 14, 2012, authorities said.

Gregory was driving around with two female friends after work when one of them received a phone call from two men they worked with inviting them to a house party near 19th and Springfield, according to court documents.

It was a birthday gathering for Orr, whom the women had never met, according to court documents. An unidentified man began flirting with Gregory, which made her uncomfortable because she had a boyfriend, prosecutors said.

Almost immediately Shepard became a secular saint, and his killing became a kind of gay Passion Play where he suffered and died for the cause of homosexuality against the growing homophobia and hatred of gay America.

Under Pres. Obama's Watch - ICE Released 2,837 Convicted Alien Sex Offenders to Comply With Supreme Court Ruling

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has released 2,837 convicted criminal alien sex offenders back into American communities in order to comply with a Supreme Court decision authored by Clinton-appointed Justice Stephen Breyer, according to a new report by the Government Accountability Office (GAO).

The 2,837 sex offenders represented five percent of the 59,347 deportable aliens that have been released from detention under the supervision of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), according to the GAO report, which was released Thursday.

“There are circumstances in which criminal aliens who have been ordered removed from the United States – including those convicted of a sex offense – cannot be removed,” the report states. “For example, a criminal alien may not be removed because the designated country will not accept the alien’s return.”

The GAO report refers to the 2001 Supreme Court case Zadvydas v. Davis to explain why ICE is required to release foreigners who have been convicted of sex crimes. In its 5-4 decision, the court ruled that the indefinite detention of removable aliens for greater than six months is unconstitutional unless there is “significant likelihood of removal in the reasonably foreseeable future.”

“Freedom from imprisonment lies at the heart of the liberty protected by the Due Process Clause,” Associate Justice Stephen Breyer wrote in the majority opinion. Breyer was joined in this opinion by J.P. Stevens (a Gerald Ford apppointee), Sandra Day O'Connor (a Reagan appointee), Ruth Bader Ginsburg (a Clinton appointee), and David Souter (a George H.W. Bush appointee).

But writing for the minority, Justice Antonin Scalia (a Reagan appointee) said: "Insofar as a claimed legal right to release into this country is concerned, an alien under final order of removal stands on an equal footing with an inadmissable alien at the threshold of entry: He has no such right."

Justice Anthony Kennedy (also a Reagan appointee) concurred, noting that "the authority to detain beyond the removal period is to protect the community, not to negotiate the aliens' return... An alien's admission to this country is conditioned upon compliance with our laws, and removal is the consequence of a breach of that understanding."

Justice Clarence Thomas (a George H.W. Bush appointee) and William Rehnquist (a Nixon appointee) also dissented from Breyer's opinion.

The GAO report also revealed that large numbers of convicted alien sex offenders that ICE did in fact manage to deport from the country simply turned around and came back in--and then committed another offense inside the United States.

"According to the data that ICE-ERO provided to us," said the GAO report, "of 4359 alien sex offenders who were removed from the country between January and August 2012, 220 of them (5 percent) had previously been removed but subsequently returned to the United States and were arrested for another offense."

Also, about five percent of released aliens sex offenders did not register as sex offenders in the communities where they settled as required by federal law. “The risk that alien sex offenders will reside in U.S. communities without being registered is increased,” the GAO concluded.

Three weeks after Jonathon Brandmeier signed off as morning personality at WGN AM 720, he’s back behind a microphone — and out of control.

Starting today, Brandmeier will be heard live from 6 to 9 a.m. Monday through Friday online at WGN.fm, a virtual station being designed to incorporate audio, video and social media components. Today’s show had been billed as a one-time test, but instead will air each weekday “for the foreseeable future,” according to Jimmy deCastro, president and general manager of the Tribune Broadcasting news/talk station and related media ventures.

With his burglary case stuck in the court system for the past two years, Reginald Brown has plenty of time to consider his future. Sitting in a mental health unit at Cook County Jail, he gazes at a piece of paper with a cross colored on it that he taped to the bottom of the bunk over his own bed.

“It’s where I pray to God that something good will happen for me, that maybe this time I don’t have to go to prison,” he said in a recent interview.

Brown, who says he has schizophrenia, is one of the mentally ill inmates swelling the jail’s population.

After dipping to 8,900 in 2011, the average annual jail population — primarily inmates awaiting trial — has been on the rise, with the daily count now frequently more than 10,000, the highest totals since 2007. About 5 percent of detainees at the jail have been awaiting trial for more than two years, according to the sheriff’s office.

With that rise in population, Chicago has regained its spot, once held by Houston, as home of the most populous single-site jail in the country — and also effectively Illinois’ largest mental health facility.

Two waterspouts that formed over Lake Michigan near Kenosha, Wis., drew looks of awe Thursday afternoon, as well as calls to local police from concerned citizens. “I saw them from an overpass on my way to work,” said Kenosha Police Capt. Tom Hansche. The waterspouts, which are funnel clouds that develop over water, spun southeast and dissipated harmlessly over the lake. They lasted for about 15 minutes beginning just after 1 p.m., causing no damage on land or to boaters. “We did get a number of calls from people who wanted to know what was going on,” Hansche said.

Will County Sheriff Deputy Chief Ken Kaupas ordered a detective to hack his wife's iPhone to see if the little slut was cheating????

A former Will County Sheriff’s Department detective claims he was demoted after he complained that a high-ranking officer who is related to Sheriff Paul Kaupas ordered the computer expert to hack into the officer’s wife’s iPad to find out if she was cheating on him.

In a lawsuit filed today in Will County, former detective Josh Fazio said Deputy Chief Ken Kaupas, a cousin of Sheriff Paul Kaupas, ordered him in 2012 to crack the pass code on his wife’s iPad to investigate “whether she was cheating.” When Fazio asked his superior, Sgt. Dan Troike, if he should do as Ken Kaupas asked, Troike told him yes, the lawsuit states.

“I can’t imagine in what universe that is legitimate police work,” Fazio’s attorney Michael Booher said this afternoon.

Two years earlier, the suit states, Lt. Jeff McKenzie asked Fazio to send him a pornographic DVD while the lieutenant was attending the FBI academy, “because (the lieutenant) apparently had no Internet there.”

Google Jet Fleet Loses a Pentagon Fuel Perk - Questions Raised about Founders Use for Non-Government Flights

Google Inc. GOOG -0.35% founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin may have to dig deeper to operate their fleet of private jets, after the U.S. Department of Defense ended a little-known arrangement that for years allowed the tech billionaires to travel on sharply discounted jet fuel bought from the Pentagon.

The agreement between the Google founders and the government, which started in 2007, ended Aug. 31 after officials at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration—which sponsored the arrangement—opted not to renew it, according to a Pentagon spokeswoman.

The move followed discussions earlier this year between the Pentagon and NASA over whether the Google founders may have exceeded contract terms by using fuel for non-government flights, according to a letter from a Pentagon official released by Sen. Charles Grassley.

Sen. Grassley, an Iowa Republican, said he is seeking an audit of the arrangement by the Pentagon's inspector general. "Are some executives getting a special deal on fuel that isn't available to other businesses?" he asked, saying the setup raises concerns about the government's role as a "fair broker with businesses and responsible steward of tax dollars."

The relationship with the Google founders already is part of an ongoing audit by NASA's inspector general, an official in that office said.

The cheap fuel for the Google executives came courtesy of a special agreement with NASA, whose Ames Research Center is based at Moffett Federal Airfield, a former U.S. Navy base that is the most convenient airport to Google's Mountain View, Calif., headquarters, about three miles away.
