Chicago Ald. Ed Burke gained traction Friday in his effort to pull an end run on state lawmakers when he got the Finance Committee he runs to endorse a ban on concealed weapons in city restaurants that serve alcohol.
The veteran 14th Ward alderman's proposal would revoke the liquor licenses of all alcohol-serving establishments that did not ban guns. The state's new concealed carry law only bans weapons in bars or restaurants that make more than half their money from selling alcohol.
"Licenses to serve alcohol beverages are a privilege, not a right, and the city of Chicago, in my opinion, can withhold that privilege from someone who does not agree to maintain a gun-free environment," Burke said. The alderman plans to seek a full City Council vote Wednesday.
