Colored Man shot dead in Morgan Park - 11700 block of South Hale Avenue

A man is dead after suffering multiple gunshot wounds Saturday in the South Side Morgan Park neighborhood.

The man, believed to be in his 20s, was found at 11:19 a.m. in a gangway at the rear of a building in the 11700 block of South Hale Avenue, police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office confirmed the death but would release identification pending family notification.

Area South detectives are investigating.

Shootings and homicides in August were down more than 20 percent from a year ago, Chicago Police said Sunday.

There were six fewer homicides this August than in August 2012. Overall, homicides are down 23 percent in 2013: from 366 through the first eight months of last year to 281 during the same period this year, Chicago Police spokesman Adam Collins said.

Three people have been shot to death since the beginning of the holiday weekend, which runs into September.

Police said 47 fewer people were shot this August compared with August 2012. Shootings are down 22 percent — from 1,679 through August last year to 1,305 in the same period this year, Collins said.

“While there have been significantly fewer shootings and murders this year, one victim is one too many and there’s clearly more work to be done,” Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy said in a statement.

“Overall crime” is down 15 percent from the first eight months of 2012, Collins said.

Police also noted that the department has recovered more than 4,800 illegal guns so far this year.

“We will continue our close partnership with the community and continue implementing our comprehensive policing strategy, but to address gun violence we need stronger laws that keep illegal guns out of our streets in the first place,” McCarthy said in the statement.

Najam Naimi jumps into Lake Michigan to retrieve a $2.99 ball - Needless to say Najam is dead...but they did end up finding the ball!

A 30-year-old Streamwood man died after being rescued from the water near Montrose Harbor this afternoon and was taken in critical condition to a local hospital, authorities said.

Najam Naimi, of the 600 block of Maple Drive, in Streamwood, was declared dead at Weiss Memorial Hospital at 4:12 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Fire crews responded to the scene near the harbor at 44000 North on the lakefront, said Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford. A person was taken to Weiss Memorial Hospital in critical condition, according to the Fire Department's news office.

Calls came in around 3:30 p.m.

A family member reported Naimi had gone into the water, climbing down a ladder along a break wall possibly to retrieve a expensive $2.99 ball that had gone into the water, and was unable to stay afloat, an official said.

The man was pulled out of the water by bystanders before police or fire crews arrived on scene, police News Affairs Officer Daniel O'Brien said.

Area North detectives were conducting a death investigation, O'Brien said.

Cops: Burglars steal laptops, tablets from elementary school

UPDATE: Police are asking for the public's help finding thieves who broke into a Chicago Public School last week and stole tablets and laptops from the Dearborn Homes neighborhood school.

The break-in took place sometime Thursday evening at the school in the 2700 block of South Dearborn Street, according to the police alert. It took place sometime between 8:45 p.m. Thursday and 2:35 a.m. Friday, said Police News Affairs Sgt. Antoinette Ursitti.

Although police did not specify the school, the only school in the 2700 block of South Dearborn is part of Drake Elementary, 2710 S. Dearborn, which took over a building formerly occupied by Williams Multiplex Elementary School.

The police alert did not specify how many devices were stolen, or whether they were iPads such as those promised to third- through eighth-grade students at Chicago Public Schools taking in students required to change school buildings following the closure of more than 50 CPS schools this year.

Police News Affairs had no details on the number of devices stolen, or the approximate cost to replace the devices. Two Chicago Public Schools spokeswomen did not respond to repeated attempts to reach them for comment.

The alert included a photograph of tablets with what it characterized as leather covers, similar to the tablets that were stolen.

Anyone with information on the theft is asked to call Central Area detectives at 312-747-8380.

Yes folks, seems this school had the new still in the box ipads securely stored IN THE AUDITORIUM! And guess who stole the ipads . . . of course the shitheads that live in Dearborns. Ipads were being sold like packs of squares in the Dearborns for a hundred bucks a pop. Now you gotta ask yourself, how many CPS schools in taxpaying neighborhoods got new ipads for their kids? What CPS administrator thought it would be a good idea to leave all the new ipads setting in the auditorium overnight? And finally, how is it that the shitheads that stole the ipads knew right where to find them. Hmmmm.
