A CeaseFire office in North Lawndale has closed its doors after a $ 1 million dollar grant from the city was exhausted.

The grant was part of Mayor Rahm Emanuel's efforts in 2012 to decrease violence on the South and West sides of the city and funded offices in North Lawndale and Woodlawn.

The organization uses "Violence Interrupters," most of whom are former gang members, to return to the streets in an effort to stop neighborhood violence. The office provided jobs for individuals, often with criminal records.

West side activist Rev. Robin Hood, who worked at the North Lawndale office, said as of August 31 they had to lay off the entire 12-person team, but he will continue the work, with or without pay.

"I believe Ceasefire works," said Hood. "I know Ceasefire works. I'm watching it in my community."

Under the grant, CeaseFire reported 141 potentially fatal conflicts were resolved in the past year city-wide, and services were provided to 75 high risk participants in North Lawndale.

24th Ward Alderman Michael Chandler, whose ward includes North Lawndale, said he was unaware the funding for CeaseFire had stopped, but hopes it will be restored.

"It's another tool that we need to help stop the violence in our neighborhood," said Chandler.

According to CeaseFire's statistics, in 2013 there was a 75 percent reduction in homicides in North Lawndale.

Police statistics also show the homicide rate this year is down 22 percent city-wide compared to 2012.

However, last month the crime rate has spiked in the 10th Police District, which includes North Lawndale, with four homicides compared to one homicide in 2012.

A spokesman for the Chicago Department of Health, which provided the grant, said CeaseFire, was part of a "comprehensive strategy" that reduced the homicide rate, and that future funding could be possible.

The CeaseFire office in Englewood will continue to operate through funding from foundations, but CeaseFire's office in Woodlawn is expected to close at the end of the month as well.

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — It sounds absurd: tickets and warning letters for parking in your own driveway.

But Pittsburgh City Councilman Corey O’Connor says it’s happened on two city streets – one in the West End and one in Squirrel Hill. And he fears, it could happen elsewhere.

“This could happen tomorrow to any resident of the city of Pittsburgh,” said O’Connor.

“This is where I’ve been parking for over 18 years,” said Eileen Freedman, as she pointed at the driveway to her home on Hobart Street in Squirrel Hill.

She says she recently got a warning letter from the Pittsburgh’s Bureau of Building Inspection.

“We’re no longer allowed to use our driveway to park, because of a law that says you have to park at least 30 feet away from the street,” said Freedman.

She says there wouldn’t be space to park 30 feet back between her home and the neighboring one because it’s just too narrow.

A pregnant mother of seven who lives across the street is trying to follow the rule, but can’t get out of the driver’s side of her vananymore. She has to crawl out of the passenger’s side when she parks the vehicle between her home and her neighbor’s.

“It’s a pretty ridiculous problem, actually,” said O’Connor.

The councilman says there’s actually two parts to the problem. First, the little-known 30-foot back law, which he says originated in the ‘50s or ‘60s.

“If you’re a couple feet into your own personal driveway, there shouldn’t be a problem,” said O’Connor.

But he also says that technically you can be ticketed, “because you have to have what is called an occupancy permit. The funny thing about that is, we don’t tell you need an occupancy permit.”

O’Connor says the tickets and warning letters are issued by the Bureau of Building Inspection. KDKA was unable to reach anyone from that office Wednesday night.

He says one family ended up paying a $2,400 fine.

O’Connor wants get the recent tickets voided, and he wants City Council to look at getting rid of the occupancy permit rule for existing driveways, and at changing the 30-foot rule to a much smaller distance.

For now, Freedman is parking on the street and taking up spaces she says visitors to Squirrel Hill’s business district would normally be able to use.

Asner said, “We’ve been so God-damned stung in this country by false wars, repeatedly, that, how can you believe in any just war with the history we have had?”

Fair enough, but then the so-called liberal cited race as the reason why his Hollywood peers aren’t speaking out in droves.

According to Asner, ”A lot of people don’t want to feel anti-Black by being opposed to Obama.”

Yes, because saying racist things about President Obama is so uncommon.

And of course, of all places fighting the perception of being “anti-Black,” Hollywood is leading the charge. You know, that’s why there’s so much diversity in television and film going on in La La land.

Instead of retooling his language to sound something more reminiscent of the truth, Asner repeated that fallacy in an interview with one of the most truth-tweaking people working in television: Bill O’Reilly.

A disturbing video shows an off-duty officer struggling to fight off a group of attackers during a carjacking.

The thugs police are looking for took more than just the officer's personal vehicle. They also got away with his gun, his vest and his badge. Now, police are reviewing security camera video trying to track down those responsible.

The security camera on a building at 70th and East End shows what appears to be five males walking down 70th Street as the officer's SUV drives by.

Moments later, the off-duty sergeant stops and gets out. He is then confronted by five or six people, who, according to witnesses and police, beat the officer and then took his 2006 Infinity QX56.

"I was thinking the guys in the neighborhood were just taking people out of their cars and that made me really nervous and scared," one woman told FOX 32 News. "No one wants to see that happen outside their home, where you feel safe, where you're supposed to be safe."

Sue Eberle - Woman At Center Of Police Sex Scandal Fired

LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) -- A Lakeland Police Department crime analyst at the center of a widespread sexual misconduct case has been fired.

Sue Eberle was fired Wednesday in the agency's latest round of discipline.

The Ledger of Lakeland (http://bit.ly/17SpMdV) reports that Police Chief Lisa Womack detailed the punishment, and the weeks of investigation that preceded it, in a meeting with the Lakeland Police Advisory Commission. The commission is made up of volunteers tasked with reviewing a multitude of problems at the agency and recommending reforms.

Eberle's lawyer, David Linesch of Palm Harbor said after the meeting that he's disappointed the city chose to "re-victimize" Eberle by firing her.

Eberle told investigators she was coerced into some sex acts.

The disciplinary action brings an end to a sprawling investigation into the misconduct.

LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) -- Lakeland's police chief and the Polk County State Attorney will meet to discuss the troubled Lakeland Police Department, where a widespread investigation into a sex scandal is underway.

The Lakeland Ledger (http://bit.ly/133NfSF) reports that Chief Lisa Womack and State Attorney Jerry Hill will meet Friday.

The meeting comes after two city commissioners urged Womack to talk with Hill after he hand-delivered a scathing letter to her about the department on June 25.

The report detailed dozens of consensual and multiple forced sexual encounters involving more than 20 LPD officers and city employees. The report was based on investigations by the State Attorney's Office and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

According to officials, the investigation centers on Sue Eberle, a Lakeland Police crime analyst who says she had consensual and sometimes coerced sex with police officers and one firefighter -- and was propositioned by a municipal worker. Eberle's accounts of the liaisons were largely corroborated by her sexual partners and others within the police department, and published in a 59-page report from the county's top prosecutor.

The state attorney says he can't prosecute the cases because of a lack of physical evidence and because of how much time has passed since some of the encounters. However, Lakeland's mayor says the officers and employees involved are under an internal investigation.
