He managed to slow down the motorcycle and lay it on the ground to avoid injuring anyone else -- an act consistent with his record in the police department, Police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said.
"Just a great police officer and a great leader," Mirabelli said. "He's going to be tremendously missed by this department and the people he served."
A source said the sergeant's fiancé was riding behind him on her motorcycle when the accident happened.
The sergeant was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn and pronounced dead at 7:50 p.m. at the hospital, according to the medical examiner's office.
About 11:30 p.m., a lengthy procession of police department and civilian vehicles arrived at the medical examiner's office, and officers saluted as an ambulance carrying the sergeant's body came to a temporary stop just outside the building's parking lot. Minutes later, after dozens of officers had filed into the lot, the ambulance pulled inside.
Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy told reporters that "it looks like he pulled over to the side of the road and kind of dropped his motorcycle and had some sort of a heart issue and had heart failure.
“Forty-four years old. It looks like he had a heart attack. He was an only child. . .he’s very close with his parents to the point where most of his co-workers were friendly with his parents," McCarthy said.
News Affairs had no further information about the sergeant’s career.
