A woman was critically injured when a 13-year-old accidentally set his father’s truck in motion, striking the pedestrian and two garages Thursday morning on the Southwest Side.
The truck was in an alley in the 4400 block of South St. Louis Avenue about 7:10 a.m. when the boy’s father got out to put something in the back, police News Affairs Officer Michael Sullivan said.
When the teen got into the passenger seat, he accidentally bumped the gearshift, Sullivan said.
He then got into the driver’s seat and tried to brake but hit the gas by mistake, sending the truck crashing into two garages, a vehicle and a pedestrian before the truck came to halt in a nearby yard, Sullivan said.
The pedestrian, a woman in her 50s, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition, Sullivan said.
Police cited the father for leaving an unattended vehicle and driving on a suspended license. The boy was not injured, Sullivan said.
