A brutal incident on the 800-block of North State Street left "Charles" hospitalized after his Beats by Dre headphones were snatched from his head Saturday afternoon.
In an interview with Fox 32's Tisha Lewis, Charles says he was left unconscious, beaten and bruised with a black eye.
"I am going to be afraid for anybody that I see out on the streets with their flashy headphones," said Charles who did not want to release his last name.
Charles was walking from work to the Chicago and State Red Line CTA station. He was wearing Beats by Dre headphones, listening to music.
Little did Charles know his attacker was eyeing the hundreds of dollars sitting atop his head. Beats by Dre headphones can cost nearly $400.
"They started hitting me and I flew to the ground and I went unconscious for about ten minutes but I had like three guardian angels," said Charles.
Police say they received several calls from witnesses reporting the incident. Some witnesses attempted to shield Charles during the attack.
"They smashed me in the face, and I have like really bad jaw, I couldn't speak for a couple of days. I'm dealing with a concussion right now, it could have been much worse had it not been for my guardian angels," said Charles.
Chicago police say this is the first they've heard of robbers targeting the pricey Beats by Dre headphones though the internet is filled with reported incidents nationwide.
"I've always thought it was safe to wear my headphones in public but obviously not if at 3:00 in the afternoon downtown, you know, being attacked by a mob of people," said Charles.
There was no comment from Beats by Dre about the incident. Charles did what police say not to do - he chased his attacker. It turns out the attacker was not acting alone and Charles says there were at least 30 attackers total.
The incident was apparently caught on surveillance camera and Chicago police are searching for the suspects.
